Vancouver Canucks captain Roberto Luongo, out of the lineup since Nov. 22 with a strained left groin, is hoping to return to the lineup Thursday against the Phoenix Coyotes.
The 29-year-old goaltender will put his health to the test Monday when he takes the ice for his first full practice since the injury, suffered when Luongo made a relatively routine save on Pittsburgh defenceman Philippe Boucher.
“If it goes well [Monday] we’ll progress from there,” Luongo told Scott Oake of Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday night. “I’ve got to get my timing back.”
On Wednesday, Luongo was named a reserve for the Western Conference for the NHL’s all-star game on Jan. 25 in Montreal.
“I’d like to play at the all-star game. It would be a great opportunity, especially in my hometown,” said the Montreal native.
“But my main focus is with the Vancouver Canucks and making sure I’m 100 per cent and here [in the lineup] for the rest of the season.”
Luongo added he’s looking forward to playing with centre Mats Sundin, who scored his first goal as a Canuck in Saturday’s 4-2 setback to the San Jose Sharks.
In 19 games this season, Luongo has an 11-5-2 record, five shutouts and a 2.19 goals-against average.
Vancouver has a 22-17-5 record for 49 points, five behind the first-place Calgary Flames in the Northwest Division.
