Men’s gold-medal Olympic hockey tickets sell in mere minutes

In a matter of minutes, 1,000 tickets to the men’s gold-medal hockey game were snapped up Saturday, according to the 2010 Olympic organizing committee, also known as VANOC.
The organizing committee made more than 200,000 tickets available Saturday after reviewing venue seating plans.
More than 22,000 orders for 130,000 tickets were processed in the first four hours of sales as VANOC’s website recorded more than 1,300 hits per second and set a record for page views at more than five million.
“We anticipated demand would be high for tickets, and the level of interest we saw… was very exciting and, once again, a testament to the pride and support Canadians continue to show in being part of Canada’s Games in 2010,” Caley Denton, VANOC vice-president of ticketing and consumer marketing, said in a statement.
Gold-medal game hockey tickets to the men’s competition, along with opening ceremony tickets, speed skating and figure skating were among the first tickets to sell out.
Tickets to preliminary ice hockey, curling and victory ceremonies are still available, along with limited tickets for other sports.
VANOC will launch a third, smaller phase of ticket sales this fall.
The committee is also working on developing an authorized ticket resale program for launch later this year.
